Shimmer (The Rephaim Book III)

Gaby thought her life couldn’t get more complicated.

She’s almost used to the idea that she’s not the nineteen-year-old backpacker she thought she was. She can just about cope with being one of the Rephaim – a 140-year-old half-angel – whose memories have been stolen. She’s even coming to grips with the fact that Jude, the brother she’s mourned for a year, didn’t die at all. But now Rafa—sexy, infuriating Rafa—is being held, and hurt, by Gatekeeper demons. And Gaby has to get the bitterly divided Rephaim to work together, or Rafa has no chance at all.

It’s a race against time – and history. And it may already be too late.

‘have been dying to get my hands on the third book of the Rephaim series ever since Haze officially turned the Rephaim series into my favourite angel series ever. The tension is palpable and the pacing is sharp making Shimmer the most fierce and kick-arse book in the series so far…I haven’t been this pumped for a series since those early Hunger Games days.’.’

Inkcrush

‘Late for dinner, late for work, late late late. Thanks so much, Paula Weston. I picked up Shimmer and forgot everything else…a gripping tale of half angels, demons, love, sacrifice and very cool violence, wrapped up in one nicely written package.’

Adelaide Advertising

‘Paula Weston is the queen of cliff-hanger endings, and this one’s going to blow your mind! I have absolutely loved reading Shimmer, and can’t praise the Rephaim series highly enough.’

Speculating on Spec Fic

This series has all of my favourite things – gloriously entertaining romance, heart-stopping action, clever and interesting plot – all skilfully tied together with barrels of tension and emotion. It’s angels without the accompanying drone of been-there-done-that paranormal fiction.

Realm of Fiction

‘Shimmer is another stellar instalment in this, the best Angel-themed paranormal series I’ve ever read, and it’s so much heart-palpitating fun that I don’t even mind being led back to that cliffhanger rock-face again for the ending.’

Alpha Reader (Danielle Binks, author of The Year the Maps Changed and The Monster of her Age)

‘Fast-paced and action-packed, this book doesn’t stop from page one.’

Launceston Examiner

‘Beautiful writing, witty dialogue, badass characters and an intense and richly-crafted tale, what else can you ask for? If you want an angel series that will blow your mind away, this is the one. Now, I only have one question: where’s book 4?’

YA Midnight Reads

‘After finishing Shimmer, I can’t suppress the urge to tell everyone I know just how great a series the Rephaim books are…This series is one of my favourite urban fantasy reads and without a doubt my all time favourite angel series.’

Fictional Thoughts

This is definitely a series that comes around once every few years and damn….I LOVE IT!

Which is your favourite book out of the three??

    1. paulaweston says:

      Hey Hayley,
Tricky question…right now it’s Shimmer, probably because it’s the one I’ve been working on the most lately. But I must admit, it does have a couple of moments I’ve been waiting to write since the series began. 🙂
(And I’m all for a film adaptation of Shadows – we just need someone to want to make it! I could certainly live with Theo James as Rafa.)
      Thanks for the message. 🙂

      1. Hayley (again) says:

One more question haha sorry! But im reading Haze now (for the 100000000 time) and at the beginning of like all books it says like for blah blah and yours says for freddie. I was wondering who Freddie and Murray are? And who shimmer is for?

        1. paulaweston says:

Don’t apologise. 🙂 Murray is my husband (so he got the first dedication) and Freddie was our beloved greyhound who passed away from bone cancer a few months before Haze came out. I actually wrote a small blog post about him here: http://paula-weston.com/2013/06/14/a-bit-about-freddie/ (We have another lovely greyhound now, Indy. We still miss Freddie, but we’re not quite so sad as we were.)
Shimmer is dedicated to my Mum and Dad. Just cos. And as for Burn…I don’t know yet. Maybe something a little different…

  2. Hayley (again) says:

You NEED to make shadows a movie!!! And if Rafa is not Theo James I will cry…. haha

    1. Hannah says:

HA! Omg, I can totally see that as well. Theo James forever.

  3. Hayley says:

how long until we can preorder Shimmer?? I cannot wait for its release. I keep complaining to my boyfriend how much I want to read it and I keep nagging my friends to read the series as well but they’re all gearing up back to uni.. I think I might get my mum hooked instead, she loves all of my book recommendations 😀

    1. paulaweston says:

      Hi Emily,

Happy to hear you’re enjoying the series 🙂

Shimmer is due out in the first week of July (although you’ve reminded me I need to double-check this and then put the date on my website!).

I’m not sure when you can pre-order, but maybe contact your local bookseller and they’ll be able to let you know/find out.

You can also keep an eye on the Text Publishing website (I’m assuming you’re in Australia?), as you can always pre-order from them once the Shimmer page goes live. It will turn up as a link here: http://textpublishing.com.au/books-and-authors/author/paula-weston/

(UK readers, you can pre-order the Indigo edition here: https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/books/detail.page?isbn=9781780621890)

Awesome! I will have to start counting down the days! Yes I’m from Australia (Brisbane/Gold Coast). I used to shop a lot at the Angus and Robertson in Ipswich a lot and they always stock both Shadows and Haze (I noticed when Haze came out, their release date was a week later than Text Publishing). I haven’t seen either book in my new local book shop yet since I have just relocated to the Gold Coast.

I hope the page goes live soon, I can’t wait to secure my copy!!!

        1. paulaweston says:

Thanks so much. Feel free to ask at your local Gold Coast book shop – then they’ll order some in and hopefully keep the series in stock. 🙂

          Hope you enjoy Shimmer!

      2. paulaweston says:

Update: Shimmer is out in Aus on 25 June. 🙂

  5. Autumn Noel says:

Okay When I randomly discovered Shadows I honestly could not put it down and read it in a day and half. When finished the book the SECOND I put the book down I was looking for the second one to see where I could find it. It was in the mail within a week and I just finished it again 2 days after I got the book. This series has become my favorite series of all time, I have recommended these books to so many people. The wait for Shimmer is KILLING me. (**SPOILER WARNING**) I’m not gonna lie I fell in love with EVERY character and when Gaby found Jude I cried like a baby. These are truthfully some of the best books I have read in a LONG time. I will be counting down the days until I can get my hands on Shimmer.

    1. paulaweston says:

Thank you so much! (I had to throw a spoiler warning into your comment, though – hope you don’t mind.)

Hope you enjoy the rest of the series. 🙂

      1. Autumn Noel says:

No worries 😀 Your just gonna have to speed up the process for The rest of the books to come out! ;D

        1. paulaweston says:

Ha! Will do my best. 🙂

  6. Hayley says:

is she going to learn how to shift ???????

    1. Hayley says:

i love the books they are amazing

      1. paulaweston says:

Thanks – and you’ll have to wait and see about the shifting! 🙂

  7. Anonymous says:

Hi ? I saw you at my Schools celebration of literature last year and I just wanted to say you are amazing and I cant wait for the release of Shimmer!

    1. paulaweston says:

Thank you. 🙂 I really enjoyed that festival. (And I’m glad you’re looking forward to Shimmer!)

      1. Anonymous says:

Hi Paula, in your series you mention that Gaby and Maggie become friends after some spilt scrambled eggs and the lending of an old, battered copy of ‘The Book Thief’. This inspired me to read a copy of this amazing book myself. Later, I was talking to my teacher about the book and she said that Markus Zusak has been to our festival several times over the past couple of years. Did you know that? You might, but I thought I would let you know that you are regarded as a really ‘Top’ author- in the same catergory as Zusak himself! Great Job Paula!!

        1. paulaweston says:

Ah thanks, but I’m certainly not in the same category as Markus Zusak. (But I’m very chuffed to have been a guest at a festival he’s appeared at.:) ). He’s one of my favourite authors, and The Book Thief is one of my all-time favourite books (which is why I couldn’t resist mentioning it in Shadows). I’ve met Markus twice now, and he’s such a lovely unassuming guy, not to mention an incredibly gifted writer. So glad you enjoyed The Book Thief too! You should also check out The Messenger and his Wolfe brothers triology – When Dogs Cry is my favourite of the latter three).

  8. Samantha Bell says:

oh my godddd this wait is killing me. But the wait will be worth it! At least now I’ve read shadows and haze enough now to feed my addiction that I can quote lines. Call it sad if you want, I’m cool with that, but they’re that damn good. Can’t wait for the third!

    1. paulaweston says:

Quoting my work? THAT is very cool. 🙂

      1. REPHAIMISLOVE says:

        hi!
I love your books very much they are amazing but in m country (Turkey) Shimmer and Burn not released 🙁 I hope they are released
        thanks X

        1. paulaweston says:

Thank you. 🙂 I don’t have a date yet for the release of Shimmer and Burn in Turkey, but hopefully they are coming soon!

  9. Hannah says:

Have read Shadows and Haze and fell in love with the story and characters. Have started to read them again and will continue to because I love your writing. I am a massive fan of these books and can not wait for the rest of the books to come out.

    1. paulaweston says:

      Thank you. 🙂 🙂

  10. Hannah says:

omg there’s so much suspense it’s crazy!! I keep checking, trying to find out when Shimmer is released, I’ll be pulling my hair out if it turns out it’ll be coming out in December. I am hoping and praying it comes out in January, or at least the first half of 2014… dammit, I really want to see the cover and blurb as well. I am too impatient.

    1. paulaweston says:

🙂 I’ve seen a cover concept and it’s stunning. Will share as soon as I get the nod – along with a blurb when we have one. As for a release date, it will be no later than mid 2014 here in Aus and the UK. Definitely not January! Hopefully the wait will be worth it.

      1. Hannah says:

I can’t wait! Okay, I think I can maybe wait until mid 2014…& I am 99.99999999% sure that it definitely will be worth it 🙂

About Me

I’m the author of the Rephaim series and The Undercurrent.

For my day job, I’m a writer-journalist-professional communicator, where my writing involves a lot less profanity.

I grew up in regional South Australia and now live in the Scenic Rim with my husband and a retired greyhound.

If you’re interested in how I came to land a publishing deal, you can read the short version in this post from August 2011. There’s a longer version (in a guest post) here.
